Banned Books Week!

Scary Stories by Alvin Schwartz?  A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle?  A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein?!  Wow.  Just, wow.  These are just a handful of books from my pre-adolescence that at some point have been restricted or challenged in America.

Really, Queen?  Where’s Waldo is on this list too?  Whuh?  Oh, because of boobies.  Hn.

Do yourself a favor this week: go on the ALA’s Banned Books Week website, look through its lists of challenged books, and find one to read.  Challenge yourself by reading a challenged book and celebrate the freedom to read.

Are You There, God?  It’s me, Margaret?!  It’s about a girl going through puberty and turning to The Lord during her time of need.  Made me laugh when I was 14 because in the edition I read, the main character and her friends were using pads that you had to attach to a belt you wore under your unmentionables.  Made me appreciate the joys of modern adhesive strips.
