Scary Stories by Alvin Schwartz? A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle? A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein?! Wow. Just, wow. These are just a handful of books from my pre-adolescence that at some point have been restricted or challenged in America.
Really, Queen? Where’s Waldo is on this list too? Whuh? Oh, because of boobies. Hn.
Do yourself a favor this week: go on the ALA’s Banned Books Week website, look through its lists of challenged books, and find one to read. Challenge yourself by reading a challenged book and celebrate the freedom to read.
Are You There, God? It’s me, Margaret?! It’s about a girl going through puberty and turning to The Lord during her time of need. Made me laugh when I was 14 because in the edition I read, the main character and her friends were using pads that you had to attach to a belt you wore under your unmentionables. Made me appreciate the joys of modern adhesive strips.
